Structurally, the family is rather uniform, mostly comprising large species, characterised by the wing venation (atrophy of distal section of Sc1). The combination of a well-developed rostrum, provided with a nasus, and an elongate, whip-like last palpal segment is essential for distinguishing the family. The larvae are rarely aquatic, but are usually semiaquatic or terrestrial, mostly phytosaprophagous (including saproxylic species). A few species are destructive feeders on pasture grasses, seedlings and crops, and may cause severe commercial losses. In general, the adults are to be found in damp places, but some species occur in drier habitats, such as dry forests or forest-steppes.

Altogether 503 species-group taxa are known to occur in Europe (calculated from Oosterbroek 2009). 141 species and subspecies are listed in the present checklist: 127 taxa from the Czech Republic (101 in Bohemia and 118 in Moravia) and 125 from Slovakia. Compared with the PCV2, four species have been added for the Czech Republic (five in Bohemia and two in Moravia), and one species for Slovakia. A few names have been changed for reasons which are noted in the checklist. Some records which were marked with an asterisk in the Tipulidae part of the 1987 version of the checklist (Martinovský 1987) were not based on published primary data, but the material in question, correctly identified, is in Martinovský's collection, now deposited in the Slezské zemské muzeum, Opava. The Czech and Slovak faunas of the Tipulidae are well-investigated, but further additions of species known to occur in adjacent countries are still possible.

Most of the species can be identified with the comprehensive monograph of West Palaearctic species by Mannheims and Theowald (1951-1980) or with the treatment on the Ukrainian fauna by Savchenko (1966). The West Palaearctic Nephrotoma were revised and keyed by Oosterbroek (1978-1980). The nomenclature of this checklist is adopted from Oosterbroek (2009); subspecies category is not shown if only nominotypical subspecies are involved.
