Very small to medium-sized species, with a body length in European species from only 1 to over 5 mm. They are mostly raptorial species and not very good fliers, usually running on vegetation, tree-trunks, rocks or on sand and capturing small arthropods; only a few groups catch their prey in flight. Species of the three subfamilies (Ocydromiinae, Hybotinae and Tachydromiinae) clearly differ in general appearance, morphology, wing venation and behaviour, and many of them have species-specific modifications to their raptorial legs; and only some Ocydromiinae are nectar feeders. The family was for many years included within the unnatural family Empididae s. lat., but since 1983 (Chvála 1983, Collins & Wiegmann 2002) it has been classified as a separate monophyletic taxon.

In all, 448 species of the Hybotidae are listed from Europe in the 2004 on-line version of the Fauna Europaea (see also the unchanged version 1.3 of 2007) which covers Europe including the Canary Islands and all the Mediterranean islands but not the Caucasus; of these exactly one-half are listed in the present checklist. It includes 224 species, with 207 recorded from the Czech Republic (180 in Bohemia, 170 in Moravia) and 170 from Slovakia. Since the PCV2, the number of the Hybotidae has increased by 17 species. So far as these new records are concerned, 10 species are recorded for the first time in Bohemia, 34 (!) in Moravia, and 11 in Slovakia. The large number of new records from Moravia is the result of two long-term extensive field investigations in southern Moravia, the project "Terrestrial Invertebrates of the Pálava Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO" (Chvála 1998), and the Diptera investigation project of the "Podyjí National Park" (Barták et al. 2006).

The family Hybotidae has been intensively studied in Europe by the present author since the 1960s and is undoubtedly one of the best-studied and best-known groups of Diptera in Central Europe, with several published monographs including identification keys to all the European species.
